Patent Drawings: Draw on your own or hire a professional

Everyone in this modern world is most capable of doing things or mostly, wants to do things on its own, to minimize the external disturbances of any sort, so that there is always a personal touch in the said work being executed by the said person. Nevertheless, when it comes to Patent Drawings, this is not the case. Although, the most common advantage of drafting the Patent Drawing on your own, is the personal touch, the level of trust that you have on yourself, your drawing, your handmade crude invention, which can never be shared with anyone else.

Deciding whether to patent an invention yourself or to hire a professional is a difficult decision for inventors. Every year, thousands of inventors attempt to self-draft their own Patent Drawings. When determining if one should patent one’s invention themselves, it is important to weigh all of the benefits and risks associated with doing so.  If the benefits do not significantly outweigh the risks, one should not attempt to patent the said invention themselves. Like, one can save thousands of dollars in the said professional fees and one can prepare the Patent Drawing when one wants, without having to rely on fitting into a professional’s schedule or paying rush fees. But these advantages come with some pitfalls too, like:

  • One may make costly mistakes in preparing the Patent Drawing and the overall patent application which may result in the loss of some or all of the said patent rights.
  • One will need to spend a significant amount of time learning as to how to prepare the said Patent Drawing and file the said patent application.
  • Failure to monitor the one-year anniversary by which a non-provisional must be filed or not providing a patent attorney or patent agent enough time to properly draft a non-provisional application before the deadline.
  • Relying on the provisional filing to protect your rights while publicly disclosing additional inventions or improvements after the filing, thus, making incorrect decisions involuntarily.
  • Making inaccurate statements such as incorrectly characterizing prior inventions of others.

As opposed to the Patent Drawings prepared by an official professional, are made to perfection, without any incorrectness, and the most important aspect is that the said professional is used to the day-to-day workings of the said execution of the said Patent Drawing. They are used to the functioning, working and the overall amalgamation of the officials working in the patent legal department, so that in case of any hindrance, they can actually get the following Patent Drawing back on track, either officially or unofficially. Thus, it is true that the number of connections and experience that a professional has would always supersede the limited knowledge of a layman, trying to draft a Patent Drawing.
